Bettering American Poetry 2015 is an anthology in the best sense of the word: a meeting place of different styles of poetry, different aesthetic principles, and different ways of approaching any number of subjects. Any reader will find poems to love, poems to like, poems to connect with, and poems that will ask us to question our own aesthetics.
They sought to compile a new type of anthology confronting the old guard by publishing works that challenged and uplifted them, and placing marginalized poets at the center.
Curtis Fox: “Feminist anthologists from this generation also struggled with issues of inclusion, and with how to create spaces for voices that continued to be marginalized by the mainstream women’s movement. Amy King co-edits the Bettering American Poetry series, and she offered her perspective on second-wave anthologies.”Amy King: “I think that it’s easy to look back and learn lessons from Florence ??? and Ellen Bass, [and adopt a praxis that says], I’m not just going to pick what interests me... The idea is to be more deliberate, and examine who am I leaving out? And to not only ask yourself, but to speak to people who don’t share your same reality. So we’re not just culling from the same ideologies and ideas of what we like.Is there bias at work? And what are we going to do about it?
