I just wanted to check in to let you know how marvelously the Bettering American Poetry - Volume 2 anthology has been working in my Modern Poetry course. It’s great. The students are really engaged in this poetry, and they are amazed to be reading this kind of work for school—this is what they have told me. This work really speaks to them. They have written some of their essays on work in the anthology, including Marwa Helal’s “Poem to Be Read from Right to Left” and 최 Lindsay’s “Ph(r)ase.” The student who wrote the latter essay (who also has a background in music) is turning her short essay into a longer piece. The anthology has also helped us in our conversations about the literary canon and what directions its ongoing reformation might take—including the question of whether the metaphor of a “canon” (borrowed from biblical studies) is the best one to use for discussing literary studies.Thank you for this great book. I’m looking forward to volume 3.
